UNITED FARE CLASSES

Read the inventory,
not just the price.

United's fare-class string looks cryptic until you know what question you are asking. Once you do, a few letters tell you whether a fare is for sale, an award is open, or an upgrade can confirm.

STEP 01

Turn on Expert Mode

Expert Mode exposes booking-class availability on United-operated flights. You need to be signed in, enable the preference once, then open the flight details on a paid search to see the inventory string.

1Sign in

Open United.com on your computer and sign in to MileagePlus.

2Open account settings

In your account, open Settings, then Special preferences & accommodations.

3Enable and save

Expand Preferences if needed. Find Enable expert mode, check it, and save.

4Open flight details

Search for paid tickets. In the results, open a United-operated flight’s Details to read the inventory.

No inventory string? Confirm you are signed in and searching paid tickets. Recheck the Expert Mode setting; it can switch off.

United describes Expert Mode as a gauge of booking-class availability, not a guarantee. United's interface labels can move over time. United source · TPG walkthrough

STEP 02

Start with the inventory string

The letter is the booking bucket. The number is the inventory United is publishing in that bucket at that moment. The useful question is rarely “what does every letter mean?” It is “which bucket matters for what I am trying to do?”

Everything at once is noise.

Choose your goal below. The relevant buckets will be highlighted so you know what to look for.

STEP 03

Which bucket are you trying to find?

Pick the job. The example inventory above will highlight the buckets that matter most.

J9

Nine does not mean nine empty seats

It means United is currently willing to sell at least that much inventory in J. Expert Mode is a booking-inventory view, not a seat map.

PZ2

The bucket can matter more than the cabin

A traveler in Polaris could have arrived there through a paid J-family fare, an award bucket, or an upgrade bucket. Same seat, different inventory logic.

STEP 04

Read the paid-fare ladders

Within a cabin, the letters generally run from less discounted to more discounted inventory. The bucket controls fare rules and availability; it does not change the physical seat by itself.

First / Business

JCDZP

J is the top revenue bucket; P is the deepest standard discount in the business/first ladder.

Premium Plus

OAR
30 PlusPoints → Polaris

Three primary paid Premium Plus buckets, from higher to deeper discount.

Economy

YBMEUHQVWSTLKGNFriends don’t let friends fly Basic Economy.Seriously. N fares aren’t eligible for PlusPoints upgrades.

Why 40 vs. 80? W and higher fares use 40 PlusPoints; deeper-discount S/T/L/K/G fares require 80.

Eligible paid Economy fares can upgrade to Premium Plus or Polaris.

Historical note - before August 21, 2025United formerly offered instant-upgrade treatment on eligible Y- and B-class full-fare economy tickets for Premier members, with M-class treatment for Premier 1K and Global Services. United eliminated that instant-upgrade benefit effective August 21, 2025. The fare letters remain part of the paid-economy ladder, but they should no longer be taught as current instant-upgrade buckets. Change reference

STEP 05

Understand PlusPoints math on United segments

For United-operated one-way itineraries, the PlusPoints charge is based on the most expensive upgraded segment in that direction. You do not add the segment prices together.

Example A

Lower-priced long-haul direction

DEN → SFO20 PP → Premium cabin
SFO → SYD40 PP → Polaris
Total for one direction:
DEN → SYD
40 PP

The domestic segment does not stack on top. The long-haul Polaris upgrade is the highest-priced upgraded segment in that direction, so it sets the total.

Example B

Higher-priced long-haul direction

DEN → EWR20 PP → Premium cabin
EWR → LHR80 PP → Polaris
Total for one direction:
DEN → LHR
80 PP

Again, you pay the highest applicable upgrade amount once for that one-way journey.

Rule of thumbOn United-operated flights, the most expensive upgraded segment determines the PlusPoints price for that one-way direction.

STEP 06

Know whether an upgrade can confirm now

Upgrade inventory answers a different question from paid-fare inventory. If the relevant upgrade bucket is open, an eligible upgrade can usually confirm immediately. If it is zero, you can still request the upgrade and join the waitlist.

PZ2

Standard premium upgrade can confirm

PZ is the primary confirmed Business / First upgrade bucket for PlusPoints and mileage upgrades. In this example, two seats are being published.

CONFIRMABLE NOW
PZ0

No standard confirmable space

A zero does not mean the upgrade request is impossible. It means there is no standard PZ inventory to confirm at that moment, so an eligible request can sit on the waitlist.

WAITLIST
RN1 / PN1

Other upgrade buckets

RN is the confirmed Premium Plus upgrade bucket. PN represents special-access inventory, including Global Services access. Treat PN separately from ordinary PZ availability.

BUCKET-SPECIFIC
ImportantOn United-operated flights, PlusPoints are generally deducted only when the upgrade clears. A waitlisted request can remain pending until United releases inventory, sometimes as late as the gate.

STEP 07

Understand the upgrade waitlist

A waitlist is not simply first-come, first-served. United applies a hierarchy. The exact mix of factors depends on the upgrade type and cabin, but this is the practical order to understand when several travelers are competing for the same seat.

1Global ServicesGlobal Services requests sit at the top of the normal Premier upgrade hierarchy.
2Cabin you boughtFor Polaris upgrades, travelers ticketed in paid Premium Plus (O/A/R) are prioritized ahead of travelers starting in Economy within the applicable queue.
3Upgrade instrumentPlusPoints and MileagePlus upgrade awards are prioritized ahead of travelers relying on a Complimentary Premier Upgrade where CPUs apply.
4Premier statusHigher Premier status clears first: 1K, then Platinum, Gold and Silver.
5Fare classHigher fares break ties. In Economy, the practical ladder runs Y → B → M → E → U → H → Q → V → W → S → T → L → K → G.
6Card and corporate tie-breakersEligible United Club / Presidential Plus cardholders, Corporate Preferred participants and qualifying United Chase card spend can matter further down the tie-break chain.
7Request timeIf everything above is equal, the date and time the upgrade was requested becomes the final tie-breaker.

United does not expose every internal decision rule in a simple public table. This hierarchy reflects current published MileagePlus guidance and current upgrade references; operational processing can vary by upgrade type and cabin. Current priority reference

STEP 08

Use PlusPoints on partner airlines

Partner upgrades use a different rule set from United-operated flights. Your purchased partner fare class must be eligible first; then the operating carrier must make upgrade space available. Lufthansa, ANA and Copa are the key PlusPoints partners shown here. Eligible partner upgrades cost 40 PlusPoints per segment and move one cabin. Unlike United-operated requests, partner PlusPoints are deducted at the time you submit the request.

Copa partner upgrades require eligible fare inventory and operating-carrier upgrade availability. 40 PlusPoints are deducted at the time of request. Copa upgrades cannot be waitlisted.

United's current partner-upgrade tool confirms that PlusPoints upgrades are available on select Star Alliance partners and depend on operating-carrier availability. Fare-class lists above follow United's published partner eligibility language as reproduced in current MileagePlus references. United partner PlusPoints tool

PZ2 is the relevant signal. J9 and C9 show paid Business inventory; they do not tell you whether an upgrade can confirm. PN0 is separate Global Services / special-access inventory.

Illustrative inventory. Your ticket and upgrade request must still be eligible; published inventory is not a guarantee.

STEP 10

Search at scale with seats.aero

United Expert Mode is best for understanding one flight. When you are hunting across many dates or routes, seats.aero can surface United award availability and provides a PlusPoints finder for upgrade availability. Use it to find candidates, then confirm the live result with United.

Availability changes constantly. seats.aero says its data is periodically refreshed and may not be current, so treat it as a discovery layer rather than the final authority.

Power-user workflow

1. Learn the buckets here.
2. Search broadly on seats.aero.
3. Open the candidate flight on United.
4. Confirm the bucket in Expert Mode before acting.
